Critic Reviews

96 Points: JAMES SUCKLING, Oct 2021 – TOP 5 WINES OF SPAIN 2020

Incredible depth and intensity on the nose with chocolate, walnut, blackberry and wet-earth aromas. Some iodine, too. All this follows through to a full body with very silky tannins that give the wine depth and length. It’s really framed beautifully. Reserved and tight at the finish. A terrific wine for the cellar. Give this three to five years to open.

Description

Marques De Murrieta Reserva, Rioja Finca Ygay, Spain

Marques de Murrieta sobrenosotros-cynoche

The ambassador of the winery in the world. The perfect balance between tradition and modernity.

A story that is written every day as a family

The origin of the Marqués de Murrieta winery is also the origin of Rioja. Don Luciano Murrieta, applying the techniques learned in Bordeaux, produced the first Rioja wine in 1852, with the intention of lasting over time.

Don Luciano was clear from the beginning that a wine with the quality of Rioja and a good aging would have the capacity to be exported outside of Spain. For this reason, he did not hesitate to send that mythical vintage of 1852 to countries such as Mexico and Cuba, also becoming the first exported Rioja.

In the Ygay Castle, noble materials and the latest technologies blend into a perfect union, turning the oldest industrial building in Europe into a benchmark of modernity and balance.

Thanks to its historical importance for the world of wine, its heritage and the architecture of the building itself, the Ygay Castle and therefore the headquarters of the Marqués de Murrieta was declared a museum in 2019.

After 6 years of construction, a new winery is built next to the Ygay Castle

The great renovation project of Marqués de Murrieta is completed with the inauguration in 2021 of the new production area, a complex of buildings with more than 25,000 square meters, built next to the Ygay Castle. These extensive facilities are equipped with the latest technology for winemaking, making it one of the most avant-garde buildings in the world. These innovative facilities are embraced by more than 50,000 square meters of gardens that make up an idyllic setting.

With this project, the winery manages to completely update itself without altering its roots and identity.

Its origin, the Castillo de Ygay, blends perfectly with the future, the new winery, forming a balanced project with a vision of constant qualitative growth.

Own Vineyard

Located in our Finca Ygay, in Rioja Alta, with a total area of 300 hectares around the winery, mostly clay-calcareous soils with an altitude that ranges between 320 meters and 485 meters.

Manual Harvest

September 14-30, 2017.

Winemaking

Grapes are first de-stemmed and then fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 8-10 days, with constant skin contact. During fermentation pumping over and punching down operations are regularly carried out. These processes ensure both effective and gentle color and aroma extraction. Afterwards the solid parts of the grapes are squashed in a vertical press. This is a gentle process that extracts color and ripe tannins from the grapes skin.

Ageing Process

The wine is aged for 20 months in 225-litre American oak barrels.

Pairing

Grilled and baked scallop with red wine sauce and truffled liquid potato. Twice-cooked sea bass, sweet onion, apple and foie mousse and fine velouté. Roast breast of Mallard duck, crispy potato and borage flower. Soft cow’s milk cheese and truffled Brie.

Alcohol: 14.5%

Serving recommendations: We recommend serving at 13⁰C.
