Montes Alpha Merlot was made with selected grapes from our vineyards in the Colchagua Valley. This vineyard uses the Water Saving Winegrowing method developed by Aurelio Montes and his team as the result of years of research that enabled them to determine the precise amount of water we need to supplement after the winter rains, especially in years with low rainfall, when irrigation is indispensible. This has enabled us to reduce the amount of irrigation used by 65% while simultaneously improving the quality of the fruit.
Deep and intense cherry red with violet nuances. The nose is complex with varied aromas of ripe black and red fruits such as blackberries, figs, and plums in syrup. Spice notes of black and red pepper intermingle with a touch of fresh tobacco and leather. Light toasted notes from time spent in French oak barrels rest upon a fruity backdrop and lend interesting sweet notes to the mid-palate. This is a well-structured wine with good volume on the palate and smooth, round tannins that make this an ideal wine to enjoy now or over the course of the next 10 years. It ends with a long and elegant finish that leaves a ripe sensation very much in line with the aromas.
The vineyards that produce the grapes for our Alpha Merlot are located in the Colchagua Valley, primarily in our Finca el Arcángel de Marchigüe. The soils are of granitic origin at different levels of decomposition with variable amounts of clay and organic matter, shallow to deep clay profiles, and a presence of round and angular stones. Our Merlot vineyards are planted to a density of 5,555 plants/hectare (2,250 pl/acre) and are double guyot managed for yields of approximately 7,000 kg/hectare (2.8 tons/acre).
