James Suckling Top 100 Wines of 2021

Grape Varieties:

Malbec (70%), Cabernet Franc (30%) 750 ml.

Tasting Notes:

The Malbec delivers its deep purple-red color, with aromas of violets, ripe red fruits, a slight touch of spices and generous tannins. The Cabernet Franc contributes black fruit, a balsamic hint and tannins that structure the middle of the mouth. A perfect combination that results in a flavorful wine with great concentration, elegance, complexity and a pure finish.

Critic Reviews:

James Suckling: 98 pts, James Suckling Top 100 Wines of 2021

Spices, fresh herbs and dark fruit, such as blackcurrants and berries. So aromatic. Full-bodied with firm, tight tannins that give the wine form and texture. Flavorful and still tight. Superb structure and length. Malbec from Gualtallary and cabernet franc La Consulta. Delicious now, but better in a year or two.

One of the oldest wineries in Argentina, Trapiche has a global reputation for fine winemaking. Led by director of winemaking Daniel Pi, this beautiful winery in Maipu is among the most sophisticated in Mendoza. Trapiche makes a wide range of wines, from tiny-production, single-vineyard malbecs to large-production, great-value wines. All of the vineyards are in the Uco Valley, where the high altitude, low fertility and mineral content of the soils contribute to the wines’ purity and minerality. Trapiche also pays tribute to the winegrowers from which the estate sources its fruit, with a range of single-vineyard malbecs named the Terroir Series. Recently, we have been equally impressed with Trapiche’s whites, particularly the chardonnays from coastal regions as well as Mendoza. In 2021, the Trapiche Malbec Cabernet Franc Mendoza Iscay 2017 was our Argentine Wine of the Year and ranked at No. 87 on our list of Top 100 Wines of the World. It’s such an aromatic wine, with a full body and firm, tight tannins that give it form and texture. Delicious now, but better in a year or two.

Description

A Brief Story of Trapiche

The history of Trapiche begins in 1883, in a small vineyard called El Trapiche, in the district of Godoy Cruz, Mendoza, where the grapes for the first fine wines were grown.

With more than 130 years of experience, Trapiche has earned its place as a pioneering brand in the introduction of French vines, the production of varietal wines, the import of French oak barrels and the use of stainless steel tanks.

True to its origins, today Trapiche is in a continuous quest for the latest best practices.

Trapiche was one of the first Argentine wineries to enter the international scene. In 1889, the winery received its first international award in Paris. In 1920, two Trapiche brands, Fond de Cave and Broquel, began to captivate the world’s most demanding palates. The 70s saw a significant increase in exports, a trend that has remained constant to date.

It is in this way that Trapiche has become Argentina’s largest fine wine exporter.
